Designing PAYable: Enabling Digital Payments for MSMEs
PAYable — Powering Cashless Payments for Sri Lanka’s Small Businesses A FinTech platform enabling micro and small merchants to accept digital payments easily through mobile-based card readers and tap-to-pay solutions. PAYable bridges the gap between cash-driven commerce and a modern cashless economy with secure, accessible, and scalable payment technology.
Year :
2019
Industry :
Financial Technology (FinTech)
Client :
PAYable Limited
Project Duration :
6 Moths

Problem :
Many small and medium-size businesses in Sri Lanka struggle to accept digital payments due to high costs, complex hardware setups, or dependence on cash-only transactions. The fragmentation of payment methods and the need for fixed-line connectivity or expensive terminals means merchants often miss out on sales or lose customers who prefer cashless options.

Solution :
PAYable offers a comprehensive digital payment acceptance platform that allows businesses of all sizes to accept cards and other cashless payments anywhere, at any time, with minimal hardware and zero hidden costs.
Key features include:
Mobile-first card acceptance via smartphone (the TAP solution) turning an Android device into a payment terminal.
A full suite of products (card readers, link payments, IPG, and more) that supports merchants online and offline.
A mission to include smaller and micro-merchants by reducing entry-barriers (costs, infrastructure) and enabling rapid onboarding.

Challenge :
Ensuring the technology is secure and trusted, so merchants and customers feel safe adopting digital payment solutions (especially in a market with heavy cash usage).
Creating a solution that works across many business types and settings (brick-and-mortar, delivery, mobile, social-media sellers) without forcing a “one-size destroys all” compromise.
Scaling the infrastructure and merchant support so that smaller businesses (with limited technical capacity) can adopt the solution easily, with minimal friction.
Addressing connectivity and hardware-dependency issues (e.g., needing a fixed terminal or wired line) so that mobile or remote merchants are also included.
Summary :
PAYable successfully positioned itself as a digital payments enabler for the Sri Lankan MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) segment by offering affordable, flexible, and mobile-friendly payment acceptance. Through its varied product suite, partnerships (for example with Visa) and focus on accessibility, PAYable has helped merchants reduce missed sales, move away from cash dependency, and tap into the broader cashless ecosystem.
The project illustrates how thoughtfully designed payment-technology + onboarding + support can open up new business potential in a traditionally cash-dominant market.
